Dear Shopper,

Woman sitting in spaHappy New Year!

I really can't believe that we are in 2008.  I happen to like even number years and this year is a leap year too.  2008 has also been designated as International Year of Planet Earth. The objective of this is to use Earth sciences to:
  • reduce risks for society caused by natural and human-induced hazards,
  • reduce health problems by improving understanding of the medical aspects of Earth science,
  • discover new natural resources and make them available in a sustainable manner,
  • build safer structures and expand urban areas,
  • utilize natural subsurface conditions,
  • determine the non-human factor in climatic change,
  • enhance understanding of the natural occurrence of natural resources,
  • improve understanding of the evolution of life,
  • increase interest in the Earth sciences in society at large,
  • encourage more young people to sturdy Earth science in universities.

The Year hopes to raise $20 million from industry and governments and will spend half on co-funding research, and half on "outreach" activities.

EclipseSpa wishes everyone a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2008!

Warmest Regards,
Anne Keefe

Hidden Hazards
Lip Balm

Lip BalmThis time of year,  skiing, snow boarding or a warm trip to the tropics might be on your destination list.  If you are like most people you'll experience dry, chapped lips.

Lip Balms can contain fragrance and other nasty ingredients such as parabens or PADIMATE O.  Research shows that this chemical releases free radicals, damages DNA, has estrogenic activity and can cause allergic reactions in some people.

Vaseline Lip Therapy Advanced Formula skin protectant or lip therapy petroleum jelly are the best products to use according to Skin Deeps web site.

Chapstick Lip Balm, Mint or Strawberry should be avoided as well as Elizabeth Ardens 8 Hour Lip Protectant, to name a few.

Featured Herb

Lemongrass

Originating from India and widely used as an herb in Asian and Caribbean cooking, lemongrass also brings its tempting aroma and skin caring properties to the spa.

Known as Cymbopogon ciratus, lemongrass is a tall, perennial grass with a lemony flavor that can be dried, powdered or used fresh.  It is used in teas, soups, and curries, as well as to complement poultry and seafood, and its light flavor blends well with garlic, chiles and cilantro.

Lemongrass is also utilized as a medicinal herb.  Rich in citral, the active ingredient in lemon peel, lemongrass is said to aid in digestion, as well as relieve spasms, muscle cramps, rheumatism and headaches.

Candles, soaps and perfumes capitolize on its fresh scent. And as a natural ingredient that normalizes overactive oil glands and features a heavenly aroma, lemongrass is used as a component in spa services and products.

In the kitchen, although normally used in small amounts, the entire stalk of the grass can be sliced very fine and added to soups.  Its bulb can be bruised and minced in a variety of recipes. Select stalks that appear fresh, not dry and brittle.

A treat for both palette and skin, lemongrass offers an escape from the everyday.

Spa Recipe
Sautéed Mushroom Salad

Sauteed Mushroom Salad

I love mushrooms and was excited to find this recipe - it's very easy to prepare and makes a great lunch salad.   Enjoy!

  • 8 cups spring mix (assorted baby salad greens)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound white button or crimini mushrooms, trimmed and quartered
  • 1 cup shallot or onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup red bell pepper, diced
  • 1 teaspoon garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives, minced

Divide spring mix among 4 serving plates; set aside.

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add a single layer of mushrooms and cook without stirring for about 5 minutes, or until mushrooms become red-brown on one side.

Turn the mushrooms and stir in shallot or onion, red pepper and garlic. Cook for 5 minutes, or until shallot or onions begin to soften.

Remove from heat and transfer to a separate bowl. Stir in vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper, and mix until sugar is dissolved. Spoon mushroom mixture on top of greens, and scatter fresh chives on top. Serve immediately.
